From the Legal Blog Watch:  “As a law student learning trial practice, and later as a young lawyer, I recall being instructed numerous times about “Rule 1,” i.e., “When the judge agrees with you, stop talking!” 

Obviously, the lawyer in this story never learned about Rule 1 or simply forgot about it.

Uniform bar exam?

Above the Law and the Adjunct Law Professor Blog both blogged about a story that appeared in the October 12th National Law Journal.  The story explains that 10 states have signed on and will switch to a uniform bar exam developed by none other than the National Conference of Bar Examiners.   For those that don’t know the NCBE folks, they write the MPRE. 

Don’t be scared though.  New York and a handful of other states have decided not to go with the uniform bar exam format.

New online catalog functionality

You can now email yourself a list of titles from the Library’s online catalog.  After conducting a catalog search, click the Keep button next to the records you want to save.  When finished, click the Kept button located in the menu bar at the top of the screen.  Type your email address into the blank box and click the email button.  The online catalog will send you an email with the subject line “Schaffer Library catalog records.”

According to the Legal Blog Watch: “The legal publisher West said that it is releasing e-book editions of 29 of its most popular law books.  The releases include the book co-authored by Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia legal wordsmith Bryan Garner, Making Your Case: The Art of Persuading Judges.” The e-books can be downloaded and read on Amazon’s Kindle.

Federal Register now in XML

According to the Washington Post, the Federal Register will now be available in XML from Data.gov.  It will now be easier  “to transport [Federal Register]data from a Web site and store it, reorganize it or customize it elsewhere.”

The FRCP is important

At least that’s what one Florida judge believes.  After receiving a poorly written order to show cause from plaintiff’s attorney, the judge ordered the attorney to, among other things, read the FRCP.  You can read more about it here.

At 6pm, the Dean Alexander Moot Courtroom will be broadcasting Judge Sotomayor’s appointment to the Supreme Court.  Here is the agenda, compliments of Susan Feathers:

6p.m.,Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman will begin the program giving greetings and remarks. Judge Lippman will then introduce Chief Judge Dennis Jacobs (US 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals).

Chief Judge Dennis Jacobs (US 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals) will give remarks.
·         Judge Lippman will then introduce Governor Paterson.

·         Governor Paterson will give remarks, and then introduce Justice Sotomayor.

·         Governor Paterson  will then make a special presentation.

·         Justice Sotomayor will give remarks.

 
Governor David Paterson is hosting the celebration of Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s recent appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court as the first Hispanic and third woman to serve on the nation’s highest court.

While the event is taking place in New York City, the governor’s office has selected Albany Law School as the sole Capital Region location to host a viewing party with a live webcast of the event. Similar viewing parties will be simultaneously taking place at law schools and other locations across the state.

You may have heard that President Obama is making his first trip since the election to upstate NY, stopping at Hudson Valley Community College.  He plans on making a speech to about 60 students about the state of the economy and education.
